In 1916, at the height of World War I, Karl unexpectedly ascended the throne as the last emperor of Austria-Hungary, earning him the nickname “Karl the Sudden.” Yet what seemed a sudden turn of history, Karl embraced as an act of Divine Providence. He saw his crown as a charge from God — and spent his reign striving for peace. He remained faithful to that calling to the end: “Thy holy will be done… Jesus.”

Helping Others
From the battlefields of World War I to exile in Madeira, Blessed Karl remained a man of prayer—beginning and ending all things with God. Emperor and king, yet first a husband and father, he understood his greatest calling was to lead others to Heaven. On the eve of their wedding, he told Zita, “Now we must help each other get to Heaven.” These words became the foundation of their marriage and family life, reflecting the same spirit of faith, love, and selfless service that guided his devotion to his people.

Cause for
The Cause for Canonization of Blessed Karl opened just one year after his death in 1923. Devotion has grown ever since, and in 2004 Pope Saint John Paul II proclaimed him ‘Blessed.’ Today, that devotion spans six continents as his Cause advances.
